Die heaters at ALCAN/Singen

Job definition:
At the ALCAN Aluminium extrusion plant in Singen (Germany), all kinds of aluminium profiles are extruded from logs.
Low manufacturing tolerances and increasing quality requirements demand complete recording of the process data, also in the field of dies.

The obsolete PLC controlling the 7 die heaters and the charging carriage were to be replaced by a state-of-the-art system, and a part tracking and a data acquisition system to be integrated. Furthermore, the owner expected the temperature control and the positioning accuracy of the charging carriage to be approved.

Scope of supply:
Böhler Steuerungen was awarded the contract for the modernisation of the PLC’s, the job management (driving jobs and heating programs) and the data logging.

Solution:
To improve the positioning precision of the carriage, Böhler integrated a laser telemeter and replaced existing S5 by a S7 315-2 DP. To provide for the job management, data storage and analysis, Böhler installed its process control system MCVIS, the local MCVIS station being used as the operator terminal.
